The toast! One of the most emotional moment s of the wedding day for many including myself. I often find myself tearing up while the Father of the Bride delivers his words of wisdom to the newlywed couple.
But why do we toast in the first place? I did a little research on the internet and discovered a few interesting facts.
Toasting first began with the Greeks and Romans. They would offer a toast as a drink offering to the deities and drink to each other’s health. A piece of hard bread or toast was often placed at the bottom of the wine jug to absorb the acidity of the wine and improve the flavor. Often the “toastee” would receive this piece of bread with his drink during the toasting.
Often the toasting could go on for hours at times. Many participants would toast just to get drunk! Eventually opposition arose to this practice and there was a call for a more civilized process. There were books written on the subject of toasting etiquette and now there are even Toastmaster clubs.
Today, the practice of toasting is done out of respect and recognition for the Bride and Groom and not as an excuse to get drunk.
Looking forward to the next toast with you!
Cheers!
